James X. Dempsey Joins the Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance
James joins as a Senior Advisor and will be partnering with Andrew Grotto, Director of GTG on a project focused on the concept of "reasonableness" in tort law and regulatory policy for digital risks, especially cybersecurity risks.
James Dempsey has joined the Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance, part of the Cyber Policy Center at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. James joins as a Senior Advisor and will be partnering with Andrew Grotto, Director of GTG on a project focused on the concept of "reasonableness" in tort law and regulatory policy for digital risks, especially cybersecurity risks.
Until May 2021, he was Executive Director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. In 2012, after Senate confirmation, he was appointed by President Barack Obama as a part-time member of the U.S. Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent agency within the federal government charged with advising senior policymakers and overseeing the nation’s counterterrorism programs. He served in that position until January 2017, while also running BCLT.
James is the author of numerous articles and papers and has a new book forthcoming this year, Cybersecurity Law Fundamentals. Recent work, including recent commentary and articles, can be found listed on his bio.
