Lina Hidalgo, a 2013 graduate of the honors program at the Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), has been named to the Time100 Next List for her work as Harris County Judge in Texas.

"We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of an alumna of the CDDRL Honors Program, Lina Hidalgo, who has shown how to take her academic training and use it to improve the lives of her fellow citizens," says CDDRL Mosbacher Director Francis Fukuyama. "Her place on the Time100 list is well deserved, and we anticipate that this will not be the last time we will be hearing from her."

While at Stanford, Hidalgo majored in political science and completed her honors thesis at CDDRL. The honors thesis was titled "Tiananmen or Tahrir? A Comparative Study of Military Intervention Against Popular Protest." Senior Fellows Jean Oi and Lisa Blaydes advised Hidalgo during her time at CDDRL. She says was drawn to the program because she had seen development challenges firsthand growing up and was honored to have the opportunity to learn from experts in the Center about the ideas and approaches taken to tackle complicated societal issues.

Elected in 2017, Hidalgo has become a prominent voice in Texas politics, and gained recognition for her leadership during the COVID-19 crisis and the 2020 elections, implementing the first mask mandate in the state and expanding voting access. Hidalgo had been previously featured in Time Magazine during her 2017 campaign.

Alex Stamos, director of the Stanford Internet Observatory at the Cyber Policy Center, was also named to the Time100 Next List. Stamos, the former chief security officer at Facebook, was recently a leader of the Election Integrity Partnership
